Heartbeat of the Soul

Here's what I know to be true:

You were born with an energy that was entirely, uniquely yours.

And everything that's happened since — the conditioning, the family dynamics, the education, the relationships, the trauma — has been slowly burying it.

The work isn't to build your energy. It's to uncover it.

That's what this pillar is about. And honestly? It's my favorite one.

The healing pyramid — and where energy fits in

Before we go deep, here's the framework.

Think of healing like a pyramid. Physical on the bottom. Then mental. Then emotional. Then energetic. Then spiritual at the top.

We are physical beings, controlled by our minds, our minds governed by our emotions. And sitting right between all of that physical and spiritual work — is our energy.

Your energy is the most you thing about you. It's innate. It's who you were before the world told you who to be.

Every healing modality — massage, acupuncture, chiropractic, Reiki, crystal healing, somatic work — is ultimately trying to do one thing: calm the frantic energy down so you can get back to your essence. Back to homeostasis. Back to yourself.

Why science is finally catching up to energetics

For a long time energetics was dismissed. Woo woo. Not real. Can't prove it.

That's changing.

Heart rate variability. Nervous system regulation. Somatic therapy. The gut-brain connection. These are all just different entry points into the same truth: your energy is real and it affects everything.

One tool I genuinely use and love for this is HeartMath. No affiliation — just real results. It tracks your heart coherence — basically how regulated your heart is — which is directly tied to how you're breathing. When you're breathing deeply and your heart is settled, that's homeostasis. That's your energy at rest.

It's a tangible, measurable way to see your energetic state in real time. For those of us who need something concrete to hold onto — it's incredible.

Why I skipped my first day of business school for an energy healing workshop

When I first moved to the city I heard about an energy healing workshop at Namaste Bookshop on 14th Street. It conflicted with my very first class at NYU business school.

I skipped the class. Went to the workshop.

Looking back — that impulse makes complete sense. It was one of the most me decisions I've ever made.

Honor your impulses. Especially the ones that feel a little reckless. Because in the big picture, those impulses are pointing at something true about who you are and what you actually want.

What energy sensitivity actually feels like in the body

In fifth grade I was on a bowling league. I had a pink bowling ball with my name engraved in it — it was everything. And I genuinely believed I could move that ball with my eyes. It worked a few times. Then it stopped. I told myself I was making it up and moved on.

I wish someone had told me to keep going.

Years later — deep in a toxic corporate job — I'm sitting in a small conference room with someone I reported to and my left ear starts pounding. Painfully. Intensely. I knew immediately it was the energy in that room. I got up and left. The pounding stopped.

From that point on my ears became my energetic compass.

Left ear — something is off. Wrong room, wrong person, wrong situation. Right ear — something good is coming. A new relationship. A better opportunity. An aligned next step.

It's still happening 15 years later. Still annoying. Still accurate.

I'm not telling you this because I have it all figured out. I'm telling you this because energetic sensitivity is real — and so many of us have been dismissing our own signals for years because nobody validated them.

Start validating yours.

Two practical ways to work with your energy today

Energetic healing doesn't have to be complicated. Start here.

Yoga as an energetic tool — not just exercise. The more you practice yoga, the more you notice the direct connection between what you're feeling emotionally and what happens in your body. Fall out of a pose? Pay attention to what you were just thinking. That's your energy speaking.

Charging your food. Before you eat — pause. Set an intention. Feel gratitude for where the food came from. Be present for the act of nourishing your body instead of just consuming it on autopilot. That's energy medicine in its simplest form. Intention changes everything — including how you receive what you consume.

How limiting beliefs create energetic blocks

You can have the purest intentions and still be blocked.

Because underneath the conscious desire — there are layers. Subconscious insecurities. Old stories. Patterns you picked up so young you don't even know they're running.

This is why healing is an onion. You peel back one layer and find another.

Energetic health isn't just about feeling good. It's about getting honest about what's actually driving you underneath the surface. The fears. The doubts. The places where you say you want something but your energy is quietly self-sabotaging.

That's the work. And it's the most important work there is.

How to start working with your energy — practical steps

Your energy was never broken. It was just buried. Start digging.

  • Notice your body's signals — tension, ringing, heaviness, lightness. Your body is communicating constantly. Start listening.

  • Try HeartMath or any breath-tracking tool to see your energetic state in real time.

  • Bring intention to the small things — your meals, your movement, your morning.

  • Practice yoga as an emotional and energetic tool, not just a physical one.

  • Honor your impulses. Especially the ones that don't make logical sense.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is energetic healing and how does it work?

Energetic healing is the practice of addressing the subtle energy systems of the body — the field that exists between the purely physical and the spiritual — to restore balance and wellbeing. Modalities like Reiki, acupuncture, somatic therapy, and breathwork all work on this level. The premise is that unresolved trauma, chronic stress, and limiting beliefs create disruptions in your energy field that manifest as physical symptoms, emotional dysregulation, and a felt sense of disconnection from yourself.

What is heart coherence and why does it matter for energy healing?

Heart coherence refers to the state in which your heart rhythm is smooth, stable, and synchronized with your breath and nervous system. When you're in coherence, your body is in a regulated, receptive state — what's often called homeostasis. Tools like HeartMath measure this in real time, giving you biofeedback on your energetic state. High coherence is associated with clearer thinking, emotional stability, and greater intuitive access.

What are energetic blocks and how do they affect your life?

Energetic blocks are subconscious patterns, old stories, fears, or unprocessed emotions that sit beneath your conscious intentions and quietly sabotage your efforts. You can want something genuinely and still be energetically blocked from receiving it — because underneath the desire is a belief that contradicts it. Identifying and clearing these blocks is the deeper layer of healing work, often accessed through IFS therapy, somatic practice, journaling, and energetic modalities.

How do you know if you're energetically sensitive?

Energetic sensitivity shows up differently for everyone — but common signs include physical responses to certain environments or people (tension, ringing ears, heaviness or lightness in the body), knowing something is off before you can logically explain why, being deeply affected by the moods and energy of people around you, and having strong gut responses that often prove accurate. Most energetically sensitive people have been dismissing their signals for years because they were never validated. The first step is simply starting to pay attention.

How does yoga help with energetic healing?

Yoga creates a direct feedback loop between your emotional state and your physical body. In practice, the poses that challenge you most — the ones where you lose balance, hold tension, or want to escape — are often the ones pointing at unprocessed emotional or energetic material. Using yoga consciously means bringing awareness to what you're thinking and feeling in the moments of physical challenge, and using those moments as portals for deeper healing rather than just physical exercise.
